On April 13, 2015 I went down to the University of Dayton to watch Anita Sarkeesian give a talk on how she is threatened and attacked on social media because of her role in discussing how women are portrayed in video games. As a computer science student I have taken a course that discusses the dangers of the internet. When it came to the topic of social media I learned that people post a lot of their personal information as well as how people will say anything behind the safety of their keyboard. This sense of safety leads to cyber bullying. In Anita Sarkeesian’s talk she discussed and even provided examples of how she is being cyber bullied by those who disagree with her and her stand on women in games. Anita receives many of death threats and insults about her being a woman. Due to all the treats she has received in her career, Anita travels around with a personal bodyguard. In order to sit in on Anita’s talk I had to present my ID and leave any bag or jacket I brought with coat check. I had no idea that cyber bullying could be so bad. I have heard stories about people taking their own lives because of cyber bullying. Being at UD and listening to Anita speak I found it interesting that even though a lot of people are against her she never backed down and continues to fight for her cause. I find the fact that she never gave up to be inspirable. When it comes to cyber bullies attacking people because of their beliefs giving up or changing your beliefs lets the cyber bullies win. There are not a whole lot of ways to get around cyber bullies besides blocking them or setting up some sort of filter. I also enjoyed how even though cyber bullying is a serious issue Anita put some comedic flare in her talk. I would recommend that if anyone who has the opportunity to sit in on one of Anita’s talk to do so. I had my skepticism in the beginning but after going I had a great time and learned a few things about how to handle cyber bullies and to never give up on the things I believe in just because there are people who disagree with it. This was a great learning experience and has given me a lot of insight on poorly we treat others.
